"Retrofuturism (adjective retrofuturistic or retrofuture) is a movement in the creative arts showing the influence of depictions of the future produced in an earlier era."
Recurrent is an immersive mixed reality sandbox that explores the relationship between time and technology through the Mediums of Mixed reality, spatial audio, and generative ai projections. The Retrofuturistic experience encourages users not only to immerse themselves in a new environment but to also discover how technology shapes time through sensory interaction.
In this experience, different sonic and musical elements in the key of B-flat minor are attached to interactive objects. when objects are placed in the center podium, their respective sounds will continue to play, allowing one to create their own audio-visual sculpture. once their piece is complete, they can use the virtual polaroid camera to capture their creation. The soundtrack of the experience is ambisonicly encoded across a dome of 48 speakers to move different stems of music around the users that also weave in and out symbiotically with the sounds within the XR experience in the headset.
This experience was created in unity, Scripted with c# and deployed onto the Meta Quest 3
Projections created with generative ai engine runwayML using source footage from our previous film work
Sound design and arrangement done in ableton live
Ambisonics for atlas b2 done with Dante and e4l
Lighting design done with Max with OSC values taken from motion capture input in Qualisys
